Virginia Hospital Center Task Force Wants Your Opinion Now
Dear Residents of John M. Langston Citizens Association, Tara-Leeway Heights Civic Association and Waycroft-Woodlawn Civic Associations,
The Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) reached a preliminary agreement with Arlington County to purchase the property commonly referred to as the Edison Complex. This parcel, located between George Mason Drive, Edison Street, 19th Street, and VHC was previously used by the County Mental Health Services and Head Start. With the exception of the Head Start program, the County no longer uses the property. The Head Start program may possibly relocate in 2018.
The three civic associations formed a task force to collaborate on issues, concerns and ideas to minimize the adverse impacts of an expanded hospital campus. VHC has committed to the three associations that they will work with us to identify our concerns early in the process. To that end, the task force and the hospital held three meetings in March to obtain citizen input. These meetings were not well attended. While actual construction is several years away, now is the time to provide input as to what you would like to see, or not see, on the expanded hospital campus. It will become increasingly difficult for the communities’ ideas and concerns once the plans for the expanded hospital are approved.
Some examples of what residents mentioned during the three meetings:
1) The design should have a campus look and feel with green space
2) Any buildings around the perimeter should be stepped down
3) Add sufficient underground parking
4) Make the new campus easier to traverse, both for hospital visitors and residents traversing the neighborhoods
5) Relocate the physical plant away from the neighboring streets.
Please mail or email us your thoughts now. Think of it as your wish list. For example, do you use the hospital/physician complex? What do you like or not like about it?
Please note, as part of the agreement between the County and VHC, the County may opt to swap the Edison Complex for hospital owned land elsewhere in the County. The County will introduce a separate process for the land swap and its ultimate use.
Please respond no later than May 31, 2016 .
